The Man, from where he came, where he is
now and where he might go to...

With Shiek AliHe finished his tour early at Camp David and requested to go "back to sea."  During his tour, he received a Navy Achievement Medal (one of five awarded during his career), a Navy Commendation Medal (two held), was issued a Joint Chiefs of Staff badge and a serialized Presidential Service Badge.  He did extensive work, side by side, with Air Force One, the White House Communications Agency, HMX-1,  Marine One, the Secret Service and the National Park Service.  He later lived in Japan and Europe for several years and traveled Asia extensively.

As Mr. Mongiello explored the globe he gained a broader understanding of war, nations, peace and people, firsthand, by meeting and talking with them.  He deliberately sought out the truth in the people by visiting with them in common homes and tents.  While simultaneously studying the printed word (in a number of languages) of books and texts he compared that to the inner feelings of the citizens.  Learning heir languages has helped as much as learning their customs.  History printed in one country is not always printed the same in another.  The understanding of that truth cannot be had via the internet or vacationing "there."  Rather a multi-year study is best.

He has traveled and spent time in and all over Europe, Asia, North and South America   Mr. Mongiello is pictured above, in red headgear on the left, as a special invited guest to Sheik Ali's Bedouin city, out far in the desert of Wadi Rum, Jordan.  You may know Wadi Rum for it's closeness to Petra, the Red and Dead Sea's.  Some know it for the movie "Red Planet" or "Mission to Mars," which were filmed while he was there -- on his first visit into Arabia.  Others remember this area of Jordan best from Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark or from Lawrence of Arabia.  His favorite city there, of Aqaba, is the city liberated by Sir Lawrence.

Because of his friendly, open minded, strong, yet wise-loving nature, he has spent time or been invited to many lands, including, going into the king.jpg (79664 bytes)Arabian desert with Bedouin nomads.  He was pleased to befriend and come to know many Arabs, Lebanese, Israeli's and Palestinian's.  He had the unique opportunity to study the Koran (in three languages), visit the oldest city in the world twice (Petra), ride camels and horses in the sands and to meet kind Arabian people all over Jordan.  This occurred while cooking for His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan (in 2000 and 2001-- click King Abdullah's photo for an expanded view).  He has scoured the Northkorea Korean  tunnels, that were dug towards South Korea (to undermine peace) and met with President Min Soo Kang of the Korean Cooks Association and many others around the globe.  Mr. Mongiello has traveled South Korea, quite a bit and made many friends there and throughout the Asia-Pacific areas..

He has had the honor to be chosen as a life member (read the press release) of the All Japan Cooks  Association (AJCA), japanstudy Buddhism and received a gold medal from their President, his good friend, Shiro Deguchi (also the Asian Continental Director for the World Association of Cooks Societies).  He has been lucky to have been hosted by the Singapore Chefs Association, President Otto Weibel, enjoyed the wonderful cuisine and heritage of Guam, Hawaii, Austria, Mexico, Panama, France, Scotland, England, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Holland, Germany, the Check Republic and Okinawa.  All of these opportunities have been chances to experience a meal of the people and with the people.  Diplomacy usually, always centers around a dinner or a meal, within the world.  Why is that?  It's a proud fact to be involved with as a chef and businessman.  So much can be understood when you sit and eat with new friends from new countries.  A bit of laughter is heart healthy and eye opening to the facts of sharing and caring for one another.  Even when you can't even speak to each other.  A smile says mountains.

If more people knew each other, the world would be a better place.  "I remember how much I hated the Japanese, before I went there, from watching too many WW II movies as a boy," states Marti.  "Everyone should get out of the states and meet the world at least once.  You can't do it through the web, a DVD or from a book."  Arabs are not going to plunge a sword through your chest in the desert and all the French are not "mean in Paris to Americans."  "Stop believing the stories you were told to think inside of your mind."  Sharing with one another, over a meal, while laughing and eating folks proud dishes can be so much fun.  Invite a foreigner to dinner!  Get to know your world and enjoy all friends from all nations.  You are more alike than you may think.

Much has been learned about the starving, the hungry, the elite, the world and the powerful.  Mr. Mongiello is now exploring new friendships (as always) and hopes to learn more about life or until at least, death.
