The Man, from where
he came, where he is now and where he might go to... |
Mr. Mongiello
subsequently tried to enter the United States Air Force but was not allowed due
to his
previous drug usage. He then
applied for several drug waivers, and received them, to enter into the United
States Navy. He was repeatedly urged to enter into the nuclear or
intelligence field, by his recruiters, due to his extremely high Armed Forces
Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
scores. He requested to enter as a cook, so as to learn
to become a chef. He had been working full time at restaurants to pay for
his Catholic school and loved the food business. The Navy then asked him to take a Defense Language
Aptitude Battery (DLAB)
examination to try and get him into the intelligence field. Marti did it,
without much enthusiasm, under the provision that, "after this - that's
it," and off he went to Recruit Training Center, San Diego, California.
He recalls, "Up in a airplane for the
first time and we even stopped in Chicago!" Mr. Mongiello then, was
immediately selected, for Honor Company. As soon as they saw his record
ASVAB, of a 95, he was ordered into the special company. He served in the
elite Drill Company of 950 and painted the flag of the corps, for his
men. 950 won every single award available and shattered previous records,
that were hard to break, ever again.
He then reported to Basic Cooks School and
volunteered for arduous,
submarine duty. Due to the all volunteer Silent Service, he was then
sent to nuclear submarine school (BESS)
in Groton, CT to better understand the nature of underwater brother, relying on
each brother. The famous school demands that all job fields learn nuclear,
hydraulic, electrical, fire fighting and nautical science skills, regardless of
being a cook, yoeman or machinist mate. He did well, despite the fact that
the school has a 33% rejection rate, due to psychological, medical or aptitude
problems. He then reported to his first of six submarines (and three
ships) and began to
sail and travel the world. (CONTINUE)
