The Man, from where
he came, where he is now and where he might go to... |
Mr. Mongiello (Martin) was later born in
America and raised in Christian beliefs. He
first went to public school, until the middle of second grade. As his
father had divorced Erika, money was scarce. He was just out of the Army
and learning a new trade called television and later sold Cable TV
(considered outlandish and futuristic). Just as soon as money became
available, Martin was sent to private, Catholic school. Already working at
the age of four, in his home, Martin quickly began to learn how to tie a tie (he
likes a Windsor knot best) and dress shirt with suit jacket. His private
school counterparts were learning how to tell time on a clock and he was behind
them in studies.
He excelled at St. Philomena's
in Lansdowne,
PA and did well in reading, spelling, English and history, he won an award for newspaper publishing in
the 3rd grade (his greatest teacher - Mrs. Corcoran), acted in many plays and productions for the Catholic Youth
Organization (CYO) and won acting awards, did well in soccer and baseball and failed
miserably at
basketball. He was not without getting himself into trouble, at school and with
the law, from time to time as a minor.
He feels that God
led him to see the bad side of the world to better round him out and understand
all aspects of the human experience. It is
hard for someone to face another and tell them what their life is like on the
streets of crime, without having lived it themselves - for one single day or
years. The finger in the face method and telling someone "what you
need is to be doing this"... is often common from people "who
know everything about everybody." Often these are the same people who
believe, since they were born into money (i.e. power over other humans) that
they are better than most others. In this perfect world, where everyone is clothed in white
and
purity (aren't we all now then) - it leads one to ask - is punishment the only answer? Should rehabilitation and second
chances be eradicated or offered? An answer of "No" is
where the word HYPOCRITE comes from. An interesting fact from the Bureau
of Prisons shows that over half of all criminals are illiterate. i.e.,
more education for all would lead to a more crime free society. You cannot
argue with the black and white figures, you can only try to come to understand
why people do what they do - and then help them to become better. Nine
times out of ten, they will take the chance to do better and turn their life
around.
He later began working in restaurants to pay
his way through Catholic High School. His senior year found him sometimes
working (cooking) until 1 a.m. At Monsignor Bonner High School
he
was taught by Franciscan brothers and priests. "I got an excellent
education that was collegiate in nature and advanced me beyond my peers in
public schools" he states. "I also was a constant attendant at
disciplinary hearings and punishments from the Dean of Men's office."
"But, I kept clean enough to try and make a good life for myself..." (CONTINUE)
